Recycled or fresh toilet paper? Advantages and disadvantages

When it comes to choosing the best toilet paper, one of the most important decisions is whether to use fresh or recycled paper. Below are some pros and cons to consider with each option:

Fresh paper is usually softer and more luxurious than recycled paper, which brings a more comfortable feeling to the user. It is often firmer and less likely to tear than recycled paper. Fresh paper also absorbs more liquid than recycled paper, reducing the need to use it in excess.

However, fresh paper requires new trees to be cut down, which in some cases may contribute to deforestation and the destruction of wildlife habitat. Moreover, the production of fresh paper requires significant amounts of energy, thus, making it often more expensive than recycled paper.

On a positive note, most companies producing premium toilet paper are concerned with the environmental impact of such products and taking measures to reduce it. For example, toilet paper produced under the FSC certification ends up bringing a positive impact on the local community and the forests, due to the reforestation projects and the investment brought to the area.

Another option would be recycled paper. Using it helps to reduce waste and the need for new trees. It is often cheaper than fresh paper since it uses less energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases than fresh paper, making it a more sustainable option.

On the other hand, recycled paper can be rougher and less comfortable than fresh paper. It can also be weaker and therefore more likely to tear. Recycled paper does not absorb as much liquid as fresh paper, which can be a problem, as the user will require an extra amount of paper to achieve similar results to fresh paper.

Ultimately, the decision between fresh and recycled toilet paper depends on personal preferences and priorities. While fresh paper can be softer and more durable, using recycled paper is often cheaper. Regarding the topic of sustainability, recycled paper is generally better for the environment because it reuses material. However, with the FSC certification, the producers of toilet paper provide local support, while investing in reforestation projects to replant the trees needed in the fabrication process.

At Monuite GmbH, we work with a Swiss partner “WC-Papier für alle”, which produces FSC-certified fresh toilet paper.
