Medical gloves are widely used – not only in medicine, but also in cosmetology and many other fields. They are popular not only among people in professions that require appropriate protection, but also among “ordinary” people. During the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, medical gloves gained great popularity as they are used to minimize the spread of microorganisms. But what is the history of medical gloves? History of medical gloves – how did they come about?

The need for aseptic and antiseptic techniques in surgical procedures was recognized as early as the 19th century. However, the use of medical gloves was not adopted immediately. Only gradually did the doctors get used to using personal protective equipment.

Who invented gloves? The history of medical gloves started with a leather model invented in 1758 by Dr. Johann Waldbaum was used to treat a fetus during a gynecological procedure. Interestingly, the main purpose of their use was to provide the doctor with adequate protection from dirt or the patient’s blood. At that time, the causes of the various types of infections were not taken into account, so it was not even considered that gloves also have a positive impact on health and life of the patient have.

The Viennese dermatologist Joseph Plenk also played an important role in the history of medical gloves. He advocated the prophylactic use of gloves because he believed they offered effective protection against hand infections.

An interesting part of the history of medical gloves is also when production of the rubber model began. This didn’t happen until Charles Goodyear invented the technology to make rubber in 1830 and patented the vulcanization process in 1844.

The first official benefits of medical gloves were noted by William Acton in 1848 – he made an appeal to doctors performing autopsies and reached a wide spectrum of medical professionals who appreciated the benefits of their use.

What else is there to know about medical gloves?

The history of medical gloves is not as simple as it seems. It is difficult to determine who popularized their use. William Stewart Halsted, a professor of surgery in Baltimore, is blamed for the spread of rubber gloves. According to his accounts, his assistants used rubber gloves during surgical procedures to avoid allergic reactions to phenol, an antiseptic used at the time.

The surgeon Werner Zoege-Manteuffl from Dorpat also played a crucial role in the use of medical gloves in Europe. It is thanks to him that the use of gloves in medicine became established during the First World War. The increasing popularity of this type of personal protective equipment meant that in the following years not only its production but also the method of sterilization was also improved. Unfortunately, however, after the Second World War, the economy became much poorer, so there were problems with production. As a result, medical professionals often reused disposable medical gloves.

Although the availability of medical gloves is mostly unproblematic these days, researchers are finding many other issues in their field that they are reviewing. They not only check the safety of the staff, but also the influence of the materials used on the quality of the gloves or their microbiological purity. So the history of medical gloves is still being written.
