FSC stands for “Forest Stewardship Council”. It is an international certification system for more sustainable forest management. An FSC certificate is therefore an important seal of quality for wood and wood products.
It is awarded when a company can prove that it sources wood products from forests that are managed sustainably. This means that the forests are used in an ecologically, socially and economically responsible manner and that the rights of indigenous peoples and workers are respected.
By certifying forest areas to FSC standards and tracing all wood fibre coming from these forests, end products such as paper, furniture, lumber, etc. can be labelled, recognised and demanded by consumers.
One of the many products that can be FSC certified is toilet paper. Toilet paper is one of the most widely used products in the world and is often made from wood pulp. The production of toilet paper can have a significant impact on forests and the environment, but FSC certification ensures that the wood used to make toilet paper comes from responsibly managed forests.

Why should you choose FSC-certified products?
There are so many reasons to choose FSC-certified products over non-FSC-certified ones. We have summarised some of the reasons:
- You can buy wood products with a clear conscience when you see the FSC logo.
- The FSC seal guarantees that the felled trees are replaced or can regenerate naturally.
- Parts of the forest are fully protected to safeguard rare animals and plants.
- FSC is the only timber certification system supported by major environmental organisations such as WWF and The Woodland Trust.
- FSC protects the rights of indigenous peoples and their sacred sites.
- Forest owners must use indigenous labour to manage the forest and provide training, safety equipment and a decent salary. Often, owners are also obliged to support the community in other ways, such as by building schools.
In summary, consumers who choose products with the FSC label can be sure that the products they buy have not been produced at the expense of the forest or the animals, plants and people who depend on it. When you as a consumer buy FSC-certified products, you directly support responsible forest management.
