What do I need to know about glove certification?

Disposable gloves are essential in many industries, from healthcare to food service. They provide a barrier between the wearer and potentially harmful substances, such as chemicals or pathogens. However, not all disposable gloves are created equal. That’s why there are several certifications that ensure gloves meet specific standards of quality and safety. In this article, we will discuss two of the most common certifications for disposable gloves: EN-455 and EN-374.

EN-455 Certification The EN-455 certification applies specifically to medical gloves. It tests the gloves for properties such as freedom from holes, tear resistance, and biocompatibility. To receive this certification, gloves must pass a series of tests, including water leakage and visual inspection. The goal of EN-455 certification is to ensure that gloves used in medical settings are safe and effective for both patients and healthcare workers.

There are four parts to the EN-455 certification:

  • EN-455-1: Requirements and testing for freedom from holes
  • EN-455-2: Requirements and testing for physical properties
  • EN-455-3: Requirements and testing for biological evaluation
  • EN-455-4: Requirements and testing for shelf life determination

EN-374 Certification The EN-374 certification is broader than EN-455 and applies to all types of disposable gloves, not just medical gloves. It tests gloves for their resistance to chemical and biological hazards, ensuring that the gloves provide adequate protection against these hazards. To receive this certification, gloves must be tested against a range of chemicals and pathogens.

There are three parts to the EN-374 certification:

  • EN-374-1: Terminology and performance requirements for chemical risks
  • EN-374-2: Requirements and testing for micro-organisms
  • EN-374-3: Determination of resistance to permeation by chemicals

When choosing disposable gloves, it’s essential to consider the type of certification they hold. EN-455 is critical for medical gloves, while EN-374 is essential for gloves used in industries such as food service and cleaning, where there may be exposure to chemicals and pathogens.

It’s also important to note that not all gloves that claim to be EN-certified are created equal. Some manufacturers may use cheaper materials or shortcuts in production to cut costs, resulting in gloves that do not provide adequate protection. It’s essential to purchase gloves from reputable manufacturers and suppliers and to ensure that they have been tested and certified to meet the appropriate standards.

In conclusion, disposable gloves play a crucial role in many industries, protecting workers and consumers from potentially harmful substances. The EN-455 and EN-374 certifications ensure that gloves meet specific standards of quality and safety, providing peace of mind to those who use them. When choosing disposable gloves, it’s important to consider the type of certification they hold and to purchase gloves from reputable manufacturers and suppliers.
